Opener has promised at least 12 HCP. With 8+ points you have at least half of the available points between you. Leave it in!
With 0 - 7 HCP, partnership is unlikely to make 1NT. Take the double out by playing your longest suit at the 2 level - A Weakness Takeout.
… I have 4443 shape and just 3 HCP. Partner might just have 2 cards in the suit I bid.
Yes - the Weakness Takeout is a Blunt tool. For more wriggle room and a better result use Exit Transfers or The Moscow Defence.
If you have 8 points or more you should PASS. Your side probably has the majority of the points. 1NTxx making is a great score!
This is a FORCING PASS. Opener must redouble XX
With fewer than 8 points and a 5 card D/H/S suit - bid the suit below. Opener will carry out the transfer. 2D/2H/2S will be a better score than 1NTx not making.
With 5 Clubs, TRANSFER USING XX.
1NT-X-XX-P-2C
With fewer than 8 points and no 5 card suit you must PASS. Opener will redouble. Then bid your cheapest 4 card suit.
Where a 1NT trump bid is doubled the Moscow convention can also be used.
After the double the responder passes which is alerted as a conventional bid.
The opener must rebid a five card suit or, not having one, redouble.
If the total value of the hands is less than 20 then the openers five card suit is the best option.
If the rebid was a redouble then the responder must bid her five card suit or the best 4 card suit.
If the total hand strength is more than 20 then the redouble can be left in with the expectation of a good score.
