Enough points for a Slam?

31+ - 6C, 6D, 6H or 6S

33+ - 6NT

35+ - 7C, 7D, 7H or 7S

37+ - 7NT

Bidding the Slam - Ask for Aces

Blackwood  - BID 4NT - Asks for Aces [After a Suit]

Response 5C = 0 or 4 Aces, 5D = 1, 5H = 2, 5S = 3

5NT - Asks for Kings


Gerber - BID 4C - Asks for Aces [After NT]

Response 4D = 0, 4H = 1, 4S = 2, 4NT = 3

5C - Asks for Kings

Responding to NT - Acol Conventions

RST (Red Suit Transfers) BID 2D with 5xH - ”transfer to H, partner”  or BID 2H with 5xS “transfer to Spades”

Stayman -  BID 2C with at least 11 points -  “have you got a 4 card Major?” 

Preemptive Bids - Weak Openings

5 - 10 : Bid 2D, 2H, or 2S with 6 of the suit, 2 honours and no other 4 card Major - 3 WEAK 2S

6 - 9 : Bid 3C, 3D, 3H or 3S with 7 of the suit, 2 honours and no other 4 card Major

6 - 9 : Bid 4C, 4D, 4H or 4S with 8 of the suit, 2 honours and no other 4 card Major

If you OPEN WEAK (or NT) you do NOT get a rebid, unless asked by partner

Strong Opening Bids

23+ (or 8 playing tricks) : BID 2C

Response : 2D (relay 0-7 HCP), 2H, 2S, 2NT, 3C,3D, WITH 8+, 3NT with 11-13 HCP balanced


20 - 22 Balanced : Bid 2NT

Response : 3C Stayman, 3D or 3H Transfers, 3NT, 4NT, 6NT, 7NT, 4H, 4S,5C OR 5D OR PASS 

Weak Jump Overcalls

6 - 9 : Jump a level of bidding with 6 of the suit, 2 honours and no other 4 card Major

Negative Doubles

With at least 6 points and a four card Major - after your partner has opened and been overcalled : “I have 4 of the other Major, partner“. More on Negative Doubles
